*------------------------------------------------------------------*
| This is a Voice-pileup trainer for IBM PC/AT and Sound Blaster(*)|
| users. |
| You can run an 8 station pileup as long as you like. |
*------------------------------------------------------------------*
*-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
*
| ATTENTION:
|
| Because of my lack of programming skill, vped runs on very limited working
|
| conditions.
|
|
|
| 1)Vped requires a fast IBM PC/AT.
|
| (Auther's machine is 386SX 33MHz. I haven't checked how slow it can go.)
|
| 2)Vped cannot run in the DOS window of MS-Windows(*).
|
| 3)Vped cannot go along with the TSRs or device drivers which hook timer
|
| interrupt(INT 8).
|
| 4)Vped requires XMS driver.(HIMEM.SYS etc.)
|
| 5)Vped requires at least 2004Kbytes of free protect memories.
|
|
|
| Please be patient with those inconvenience. de JE3MAS MasIII H.Kozu

<<running vped>>
Copy VPED.EXE to the PED directory. There must be at least one *.PED file
containing cw data.
VPED does not care about the SoundBlaster(SB) configuration.
If your system only has the capability to run PED(cw version) with
8pile-ups, this will be sufficient.
1. C:\PED>VPED (C/R) (no option switches available)
If there is no *.PED file or not enough XMS memory,
VPED will terminate with an error message.
2. VPED displays the data select window, chose one of them.
3. The Voice data select windows will be displayed.
Initially, you will not have voice data, so chose [NEW FILE].
Input the FILE NAME (system adds extension ".VPD" automatically).
4. The main menu will be displayed but without voice data, hence you can not
select Pileup trainer.
5. Creating the voice file
If you find some voice data (*.VD) in your archive,
you can generate voice file(*.VPD) using VPD.COM as follows:
C:\PED>VPD sample -INIT JE3MAS
(voice file:SAMPLE.VPD, voice data:JE3MAS.VD for example)
The relationship between callsign file(*.PED) and voice file(*.VPD) are
as follows.
*.VPD files hold 9 voice banks. Each bank(VOICE0-VOICE8) holds all
alpha numeric and phonetic voice data. You can set one of those 9banks
as the operator at the controls and other 8banks are for calling stations.
So 9 different voices for those voice banks are recommended. If you record
all banks by yourself, try to change the pitch, tone or accent for each
voice bank. You can imagine how difficult it is to separate 8 similar
voices on the same frequency at the same time.
VPED picks up 8 calls from *.PED and constructs the voice stream from
#0 to #8 voice banks of *.VPD. This is quite similar to DVP+CT*
voice generation.
Connect a microphone to the SB.
Chose #6 in the main menu. Voice data selection windows will open.
You will be able to select [NEW FILE] or the file you just created
in the previous step. Select the file you just created.
Chose one voice bank from VOICE0-VOICE8 by using the up/down arrow keys,
typing ordinary, you can change the name"Voice0-Voice8" to other name
that you like, then press the return key.
The cursor will jump to the "WORD" column. Record the letter which is
displayed.
After hitting F5-F8, when the first Voice input is detected, recording
starts immediately. This feature prevents your speech from being
truncated. But don't try to record without connecting a microphone, this
feature makes VPED hang up.
Recording stops automatically after a short time. You should be quick in
your recording otherwise you will get truncated speech.
If you wish to record the alphabet sequentially use the F1-F4 key to
initiate recording for the next letter in the sequence.
<<keys for recording>>
/sequential recording/ /normal recording/
F1:0.20 sec F5:0.20 sec
F2:0.27 sec F6:0.27 sec
F3:0.32 sec F7:0.32 sec
F4:0.20 and/or 0.27 sec F8:0.20 and/or 0.27 sec
You can set the letter to recorded, and play back the recording
by hitting keys below.

Hitting F9 key, the playback cycles through all the sounds recorded
for a particular voice bank. Hit any key to stop the playback.
You can edit the previously recorded sounds as follows:During playback
use right/left arrow key to trim the recording length.
Hitting F10 key, all the recorded sounds are played back sequentially
from the letter 'A' to the phrase 'See you'.
You must record all the letters in each voice bank.
When done, press the ESC key to finish recording, the cursor will return
to the voice bank selection column. The ESC key functions as a "terminatio
n
of current action" and it returns the user back to the previous menu
window.
6.Let's play

Vped has so simple data structure that you can make your own data easily.
It is the same as that of CW-pileup trainer. (Ped.exe)
